Moonlight Bay, California: a safe, secluded small town that is at its most picturesque in the gentle nighttimes that inspired its name. But now, somewhere in the night, children are disappearing. I had so many favorite scenes in Moonlight - and since the film is divided into three parts, it's quite a number - so I'll just start sharing:

calmly, methodically, little moves across the sand, approaching the water. a beat more of little easing up to the surf, then...

a b c Stephenson, Will. "Barry Jenkins Slow-Cooks His Masterpiece". The Fader . Retrieved October 22, 2016. A mutual friend in Miami passed along a copy of McCraney's play a few years ago, knowing Jenkins would be interested. When he read it, he thought its tripartite structure offered "a new way of looking at the dynamics of a relationship, of fate and possibility." He'd wanted to make a film in three parts.

Sometimes, a book defies description or, rather, refuses to settle into a conventional genre. David Bentley Hart’s prodigious mind and imagination has given us just such a book. Perhaps, here, Sophie’s World meets Alice through the Looking-Glass, or Don Quixote meets The Wind in the Willows. [7] Post production began in November 2015 and was completed in April 2016. [44] The film was edited in Los Angeles [39] by Joi McMillon and Nat Sanders, former university schoolmates of Jenkins. [42] Sanders was responsible for editing the first and second chapters. [45] McMillon was responsible for the third act which included the "diner scene", a favorite of the cinematographer Laxton. In addition to these, Hart published a defense in 2015 of there being animals in paradise that involved a debate with a "manualist neo-paleo-neo-Thomists of the baroque persuasion." In this essay, Hart made several references to Roland: The final scene in the flower garden tearfully anticipates final farewells and ends with the reading of a poem comprising the " Coda: The Great Voyage." This poem is about a passage beyond this world, and its author is ambiguous (being potentially any of the three main characters: Aloysius, Roland, or David).Learning from Animals with David Bentley Hart". Rupert Sheldrake. 1 July 2021 . Retrieved 7 January 2023. The beginning stupidity is not the worst things about this novel. It's composed of almost endless padding. Koontz, never the most challenging of writers, here reaches the absolute bottom. Whenever there's a possible plot development or any hint of ambiguity, he explains every possible solution or action as if the reader was too stupid to do this on his/her own. There's absolutely no subtlety or suggestion, everything is spelled out, and to make matters worse what could be spelled out in one word is spelled in twenty. Koontz constantly holds the reader's hand, afraid that when there might be some confusion they might have to actually use their brains and will understand that what they're reading is a product of, uh, low quality.

Not my favorite Dean Koontz book; I found myself getting annoyed with all the analyzing the main character does; it seems that every time anything happens, the narrator goes off into another long explanation which is supposed to be him guessing what is going on and philosophizing about what it all means, etc. This is ok at first but after awhile it gets to be way too much. Koontz again thrilled me with his ability to set a scene and create a true sense of dread. His gift is in putting his characters in situations where they (and you as the reader) feel helpless in the midst of unsettling and spooky circumstances. In this case, the circumstances all revolve around occult happenings in and around Fort Wyvern, the abandoned military base that the main character, Christopher Snow, frequents.Composed of alluring and allusive shadows, shapes, and textures. . . . With the six-sentence text providing an almost incantatory counterpoint to the pictures’ clean, geometric lines, and bold, flat colors, this is a lovely bedtime meditation on themes of universality, a shared planet, and quiet wonder.” —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review Hammond, Pete (September 1, 2016).
